"Midwest Represent" CD for CD Mix Club

Jay Farrar and Jeff Tweedy of Uncle Tupelo. Liquor Guns & Ammo was a store down the street from my high school. It is refrenced in "Whiskey Bottle." The store is closed, but the sign now hangs in Shakespeare's Pizza.

Bill Hoover of The Darktown House Band. That is a band I wish I could go back in time and see again.

The Bottle Rockets

The Blue Note, Columbia's best music venue. (Okay, there aren't too many to choose from in Columbia, but still great.)

I'm now a member of a very small and elite CD Mix Club. I produced my first mix CD for the club and titled it "Midwest Represent." I felt like it would be nice for CD Mix Club members to know my music roots. I am proud to be from what I like to call the "cradle of Alt-Country music" the Midwest, specifically Columbia, Missouri. Here is the play list and a few little tidbits here and there about the bands. If I added a 21st song it would be Uncle Tupelo's "Whiskey Bottle" as it is about my home town.

1. Town I Hate-The Starkweathers-Columbia, MO (Mike Ireland of the Starkweathers has some good solo work)

2. Gravity Fails-The Bottle Rockets-Festus, MO (Now that they are on Bloodshot Records they say St. Louis, but that's a lie. If you read the Wilco Learning How to Die book you'll read quotes about Uncle Tupelo by Bottle Rockets lead singer)

3. True to Life-Uncle Tupelo-Bellville, IL (where many of my relatives are from) it's close to the STL

4. Eyelash-Darktown House Band-Omaha, NE (Bill Hoover-lead male, is recognized as "discovering" Connor Oberst of Bright Eyes-trust me, google it.

5. Danny Taylor-The Starkweathers

6. I'll Be Comin' Around-The Bottle Rockets

7. Engine Engine #9-Darktown House Band (oh yeah, lead male is married to lead female)

8. New Madrid-Uncle Tupelo (New Madrid (not pronounced like Madrid, Spain) is a town in Missouri. There is also a fault line called the New Madrid fault where when I was in jr. high it was believed we'd have the strongest earthquake in history)

9. One For Her One For Him-The Starkweathers

10. 1000 Dollar Car-The Bottle Rockets

11. Gonna Quit It-Darktown House Band

12. Idiot's Revenge-The Bottle Rockets

13. Loosen Up Your Grip-Darktown House Band

14. Still Be Around-Uncle Tupelo (Jessica was obsessed with this song in high school)

15. Take Me To The Bank-The Bottle Rockets

16. Moonshine-Darktown House Band

17. Indianapolis-The Bottle Rockets

18. White Trash Boy-The Starkweathers

19. Heavy Metal Drummer-Wilco-Chicago, IL (Remember, Jeff Tweedy of Wilco was in Uncle Tupelo, also Heavy Metal Drummer refrences "The Landing." The Landing is Laclede's Landing in St. Louis, MO)

20. Radar Gun-The Bottle Rockets

Hi,

I came accross your blog searching for the Starkweathers EP. Thus far, I've only been able to locate 3 of the tracks- but both the ones I'm missing are on your mix. If you would by chance be up for sending me a copy I would be eternally grateful. And oof course I'd be more than happy to send you a mix in return. Thanks for your time -Andy (astreasick@comcast.net)

Jessica, like Andy who posted above me, I found your site looking for the Starkweathers EP. I grew up in Columbia (Hickman class of 1991) and, in fact, still live here, so I'm sure we've been to a lot of the same shows at the Blue Note. I love all the songs on your mix, but especially Danny Taylor. If there's any way you could send me a copy of your mix, or even just that song, I would be forever indebted and would do anything you asked to return the favor. Feel free to drop me a line. Thanks a whole bunch. Bill
