Let me begin by saying I know things could be so much worse, like Hurricane Katrina worse or a house fire worse or a break-in, or whatever. But last night I had a taste of sometimes crap happens and you're just screwed. And right now, despite knowing it's not that big of a deal, I'm having a moment of stress and feeling a bit sorry for myself.
My apartment flooded (in the middle of this Texas drought). Around midnight I heard a loud sort of gushing sound coming from my bedroom. My bathroom is in my bedroom and the sink is separate from where the tub and toilet are. Hot, steaming water was gushing out from my cabinets under my sink and flooding the hallway, bathroom, part of my closet, part of my bedroom, and part of my living room. I burned the bottom of my feet and arm trying to figure out what was happening. The water was so hot and there was so much of it that I couldn't even get to the sink to figure out if there was something I could turn off. Eventually maintenance came and I learned that the hot water line under my sink broke. My poor downstairs neighbors had water coming out of their light fixtures.
The maintenance guys were still working on my apartment at 1:30 AM when I finally decided to leave and stay at Bobby's. I came back this morning and just cried from lack of sleep and feeling overwhelmed with the cleanup ahead of me. Luckily no electronics or clothing were damaged, but some things were ruined like my hairdryer, my grandmother's scarves (stained after being exposed to scalding hot water), some watches, and a feather headband. Everything else like all of my jewelry was just sitting in water. I'm sure there are more things that are damaged, but that's all I've seen so far. Everything else is just soaking wet.
One of the maintenance guys just came by to check on things and told me they were here until 3:30 AM. I feel so bad for those guys. I spoke briefly with the apartment manager who is aware of other incidents I've had with them like when they switched my locks and didn't tell me and I was locked out in 103 or so degree weather. She basically told me, "yeah, that's some bad luck." I have renter's insurance but since I didn't lose any major items I'm not sure a claim is worth it between what my deductible is and how much detail they need on the claim list. It makes me wonder, do insurance people inventory every single item they purchase and gift they get because I don't. They said if an item was a gift they'd ask for a statement from the gift giver. Seriously?
Okay, enough procrastinating, time to really start cleaning up.

Ughh... Jessica, I'm so sorry this happened! What a pain. Glad that not too many things were ruined, but it's a bummer that anything at all was ruined! Hopefully it's all behind you now and the maintenance guys fixed the pipes for good!
Oh, that is awful. So, so sorry to hear it.
And just let me know if you need me to send you a statement if the $10,000 rolex watch that I gave you was part of what was damaged. It would be no trouble, really.
