Yes, my friend, that is a popcorn ceiling...one of many in our house that we've decided to just "rock." Honestly, we had to move right in with no time to make any improvements so for now we've decided to turn a blind eye.
I only noticed it b/c the house that we're moving into has some "swirl" (not sure if there is a name for it) ceilings, and I was hoping to turn them into plain, which caused me to do some online research in which I discovered that popcorn is usually difficult and messy to get rid of - and you also have to make sure that it does not contain asbestos! (If it does, I guess it's best to leave it alone and not disturb it?) I don't know. We'll see if I'm able to take down the swirls or not.
I just had to google "swirl ceiling." Yeah, removing popcorn is a big messy job and as much as I'd love to have pretty smooth ceilings I just don't think it's going to happen. One downfall of a house built in 75 but easier for me to overlook than I thought it would be. There have just been a few "70's" aspects of the house that we've just decided to "embrace."
