Decor Debate

Opinions wanted but first, ignore the hideous fan please. We painted the back of the shelves black when we first moved in. We debated painting the top row and decided against it because we didn't like how, well, I don't know, because that's why. My mom says it looks unfinished and today as I lay here on the couch looking at it I wonder if we should have painted the top. I'd love to hear your input even though we'll still just do what we want. Tee hee.

Cool! Wow, I didn't know you had an amazing fireplace wall and vaulted ceiling like that! Was the brick already painted or did you do it? (I ask b/c we've got fireplaces in our new place that I want to paint white like that -- unless you advise against it!) ; )

As to your question, I probably never would've had the eye to notice that, but now that you mention it, I agree with your mom! I think it would look more complete to go on up, but like you said, do what you want!

Kate, yay for feedback! I appreciate it. I think I will print out the picture and color in the spaces to get a better visual. One of the few things we lucked out on was the fireplace already being painted. Can't tell you if it's a pain in the ass to do or not. The funny thing is that our neighbor has the same house but instead of built-ins he has long velvet panels on each side. It's so bizarre. Thankfully we didn't inherit that.

Oh , and as much as we love the look of the fireplace, it sure made arranging our furniture and TV a challenge. Our neighbor with the same house has a wall knocked so the house is open as soon as you walk in. I love how it looks but we'd lose the wall with the loveseat and I just don't know that there's another way to arrange it.

I don't know...I kind of like it how it is!! I feel like the next space up isn't really part of the shelves? I'm not sure though. I do think you should mock up a picture of what it would look like!

Susan, that was my original thinking with the angled tops. Mock picture will happen soon.

I keep looking at it and can't decide! I started trying to find similar situations on the 'net, but it's kind of hard. This is the closest I could find, although totally different. But, I feel like it's the same in that the part above the shelves is actually part of the wall, not the shelves and should be treated the same as the wall, not the shelves.

But, I also think it could look okay with it painted.

Susan, yes I would agree-the top is not part of the shelves. And I feel like it would close in the room and stand out too much if there were two angled black portions at the top. It would almost look like an arrow.

I keep coming back and looking at it - haha! I love solving stuff like this. I feel like there's actually a "right" answer here, I'm just not 100% sure what it is. But, on my last look at your pics, I was wondering if you could do something to the bottom part - where the cabinets are. Like possibly paint the trim black? Just a thought to bring some black into the bottom part of the unit.

Interesting. I never thought about that. I'll play around with that idea too.

You all may have convinced me that it's better left alone. I love the idea of printing a copy of this picture and playing around with coloring it in!

I think Susan is on to something there with adding a little color to the trim (and maybe handles?) of the cabinets below!

I'm sure. Don't paint it. And I like the trim all white. There. (Did I win?)
