Todd and me on the Zilker Train

Peter Pan Mini Golf

I believe I wrote “visitors from out of town” on my list of things that I love. I had one this weekend! My friend Todd who I’ve known since college visited this weekend from Portland for a short but action packed weekend.
Friday night we met up with Lorena, Cody, Madelyn, Jarrett, and Jonathan at Polvo’s for dinner. We always seem to get stuck under the stars when it’s cold outside but it was still fun. Later we headed downtown and hung out at Creekside Lounge and then the Mohawk for the annual beard and mustache competition. The place was packed, like line out the door packed. Todd got to meet some interesting people and had some entertaining conversations. It was definitely a good way to introduce him to the “Keep Austin Weird” culture. We finished the night with a game of Scrabble. I’ve been talking a lot of trash but realize I am not so good as it is at Scrabble, and really not good if I’m tired.
I had a meeting Saturday morning so the day didn’t get started until lunch time at Galaxy Cafe. We then headed down to South Congress and walked around checking out a few of the shops. I got to show off my cards at Parts and Labour and then pig out on cupcakes at the Hey Cupcake trailer. After that it was on to Town Lake trail where we walked down to Zilker Park. We walked around Barton Springs and then took a ride on the Zilker Zephyr, a mini train ride along the trail. It was my first time and no, we were not the only adults without children on the ride. Later we grabbed some coffee then on to another Austin first for me (and him), putt-putt at Peter Pan Mini-Golf. Peter Pan is an Austin icon and I can’t believe it took me seven years to finally experience it! After an exhausting day we had a nice dinner at East Side Café where they grow their own vegetables in the garden by the restaurant, an old house. I don’t go often, but I love that place. They decorate every plate with a little flower from the garden. The night finished with another Scrabble victory for Todd. I slacked in my Scrabble training and regret it now. I must start again because I am determined to beat him the next time we see each other.
Todd left early Sunday morning but my Austin fun did not end. I met up with the gang again on Billy’s BBQ patio and had some awesome food in the sunshine. I picked up some cupcakes and then we all met up again at Cody and Madelyn’s for some Oscar watching.
It was a great weekend and I was reminded of how much I love my city!

I'm glad it was such a fun weekend!
action packed, eh?
"cold" ???? I am confused by your coat-less self, eating outside, playing mini golf no less, referring to something as "cold." our saturday night dinner date required shoveling to get out - nuff said. you know I love you when I say I am trying very hard right now not to hate you.
peter pan and the zilker train! those would be firsts for me, too -- must add them to the list for our next visit. : ) Glad it was a great weekend.
It was cold at night and chilly during the day...for Austin standards :) Notice I am wearing a jacket during golf and should have been wearing a heavier one plus gloves! Looking at the pictures again I also notice how tired I look!
Ditto Kate's message :-) Our definitions of cold must vary greatly. But, seriously, that sounds like a lot of fun!!
