Wow, a song and an old high school yearbook have a lot of power in stirring up memories. Last night while downloading a particular embarrassing CD to my iTunes I was reminded of an old college friend that I hadn't had contact with in over a year. I sent him a quick message to let him know I thought of him and to see how he was doing. I got a quick response back. Communicating with him took me back to all kinds of college dorm friends and memories. This may sound pathetic coming from a 32 year old woman, but the two years I lived in the dorms were two of the greatest years of my life. I got to have so many fun experiences and learn so much about myself at a young age. I stayed in my hometown for college and to save money my parents wanted me to live at home. Thank God they realized how important the whole college experience is, not just the education, but independence and relationship building as well. I've lost touch with a good number of college friends, but am still grateful for all of them.
Later at Project Runway party, I dug out my senior year yearbook to show Cody and Madelyn an old friend that I think Cody resembles. Jonathan started reading my yearbook messages out loud. I'm actually still friends with many of the people who signed my yearbook! I forgot about my multitude of nicknames, certain crushes, and forgot about some people all together! It reminded me how lucky I was to have such a positive high school experience when that can be one of the toughest times in people's lives. It was fun reading things like, "Blue Note shows like Uncle Tupelo, The Soup Dragons, and Fugazi were so fun!" Thank you mom and dad for letting me do those things in high school!
The cool part of all of this nostalgia is that it didn't make me want to go back to those times, it just made me grateful for what I've been able to experience and the people I've been lucky to know along the way.
