Abraham Lincoln's last words...per David Sedaris

My freakishly small hooves playing Uno with Tobi and Jonathan while waiting outside in 100 degree weather for David Sedaris. A spider crawled into Jonathan's beard while we waited. Photo stolen from Tobi (Swampechaun)

Me, my snacks, and my new David Sedaris book inside Bookpeople. Grinning because we were finally inside in the group of the first 100 people so we got to get our books signed first and got to be on the same floor as David Sedaris' reading.

David Sedaris not only personalized everyone's books, but drew pictures in each one too. Jonathan went first. David asked him if he wanted a happy or sad turtle. Jonathan said, "happy." David responded with, "I knew it," and proceeded to tell Jonathan that the reason the turtle was happy was because Jesus suffered for us on the cross. That was kind of unexpected.

Next was Tobi's turn and I have to say she got the best picture of all! David asked Tobi if she liked owls. She answered yes. He said, "You know how we hear owls saying, who, who?" Tobi said, "Yes." David said, "You know what they're really saying? I like black people." He then offered us some nuts. Very polite.

David asked me, "Are you Jessica?" I answered, "Yes. Are you David Sedaris?" He said yes and started drawing. I asked him if it was Abraham Lincoln. He said it was and then asked if I knew what his last words were before he got shot. I said no and he said, "Tax the Mexicans. And then he got shot. Coincidence?" And he shrugged his shoulders, "I think not."

David Sedaris began by reading a funny story out of his new book, then a new story he was working on about insects, and then some excerpts from his diary. I forgot about his diary. He read out of it the last time I saw him and it's hilarious. He finished by answering some questions. Man I love that guy. He's brilliantly funny and just seems like a genuinely nice guy. Thank you so much to Jonathan for getting the vouchers, driving, and Tobi for joining too! We capped off the night with some yummy Torchy's tacos. I had a wonderful evening.
