Weekend Recap

My blog seems to only be filled with weekend recaps these days...which I will again provide, but Jessica, what do you do during the week?  Well, obviously that depends on what's going on but here's what's going on this week:  Tonight, Monday night, I'm going to the Austin City Limits taping of the Avett Brothers.  This is my second ACL taping experience and I'm so excited!  My first one was Calexico a couple of years ago and you can see me in the audience!  Not sure that will happen tonight, but I'm still excited.  The Avett Brothers are new to me, only finding out about them maybe three months ago, but I think it will still be a great show.  Wednesday night I'm going to try to make it to a Mad Men themed happy hour and I do have an outfit prepared using what I already have in my closet and a handbag that is in my vintage handbag "collection."  As far as work this week there are some fun things going on as well.  I'm getting a guitar class started for some of our kids and picking up the guitars this week.  Thursday my department is having a Thanksgiving potluck which means I'll be stuffing my face and Friday is the last day of this professional development class that I've been in for the past year.  Rumor has it that we are going to a movie at the Alamo Drafthouse.  Woo hoo!

Okay, so here's what went down this weekend...

Friday night I went to Mitzi's 30th birthday party.  She is one of my favorite people in Austin so I was happy that she had a happy and fun filled birthday.

Saturday morning Bobby and I went to a few garage sales.  No finds for me as we started pretty late but Bobby did find himself a new hat.  Saturday night we went to Antone's to see Son Volt.  I can't remember when I saw them last, but had stopped following Son Volt because I eventually found them to be so boring.  Saturday's show had more energy and was not so boring!  I can't say that about every song, but it looks like Son Volt has improved in terms of not being super boring.  Oh, and Jay Farrar actually acknowledged and talked to the audience a few times.  The show finished with one of the band members proposing to his girlfriend on stage.  I wonder how many engagements I've witnessed at concerts.

Sunday I met up with my friend Camron to go check out Art from the Streets at the ARCH, or Austin Resource Center for the Homeless.  This is the second year in a row that Camron and I have gone to this exhibit and art show together.  Art from the Streets is a program that provides open studio art classes to the homeless twice a week and every year they have an art show.  Most of the artists are present and it's interesting hearing their stories.  Camron ended up buying a painting from a man we had both talked to the previous year.  After that show we checked out a few studios participating in E.A.S.T., or East Austin Studio Tour.  Basically there are tons of art studios of all different kinds on the east side of Austin and during EAST they open up their doors for exhibits and activities.  I've gone at least the last two or three years and it has become one of my favorite events.  It's inspiring and makes me proud of our town.  I ended up buying a small piece of work by one of my favorite local artists, Adreon Henry.  His larger works are amazing but out of my price range. Luckily he has affordable small collage works done on cardboard.  The one i bought is now hanging in my living room.  Camron bought one of his t-shirts with a figure on it saying, "no one checks myspace anymore."  Sunday night Bobby and I went to Fiesta Market and watched Mad Men which seems to now be our Sunday night routine.

I hope this week flies by because I'm ready to check out more EAST next weekend!

You have to meet my friend Lucy. Y'all really have the exact same music taste. I've been hearing her talk about The Avett bros for a while.
